Gold American Buffalo Coin DetailsIntroduced in 2006, American 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins are the US Mint’s first pure 24-karat gold (.9999 fine) coins. Struck at the Mint’s West Point, NY facility, these exquisite American gold buffalo coins are usually comprised of gold mined within the USA. American Gold Buffalo coins were created by the United States Mint as a means of competing with bullion coins from other sovereign mints struck in 24-karat gold. The U.S. government guarantees that each coin includes the amount of actual gold weight in Troy ounces, which ensures that every American Buffalo coin is recognized as legal tender. The market value of the coins is generally about equal to the market value of their gold content, not their face value. Their actual selling prices vary based on the current spot price of gold. American Buffalo gold coins are beautiful collectibles for any numismatist. |

History | The Gold American Buffalo was created to compete with foreign coins available in 99.99% pure gold that was dominating the bullion market. The Gold American Eagle was only 91.67% gold, and people were turning to other, more pure alternatives. As soon as the Gold American Buffalo was issued, the attention of collectors and investors was focused back on the United States. |

Design | Designed by James Earle Fraser, the obverse (front) design featuresa Native American, whom Fraser said he created as a mixture of the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes, who posed as models for him to sketch. The front also shows the motto “LIBERTY” on the top right, the year of mintage on the bottom left, and below that the letter F for Fraser. The reverse (back) designfeatures a depiction of Black Diamond, a resident bison at New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. The reverse also features the usual UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – E PURBUS UNIUM – IN GOD WE TRUST – the symbolic $50 face value and the coin’s weight and purity – 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD. |
